In this comprehensive, step-by-step guide, Hoque (LIFT: Fostering the Leader in You Amid Revolutionary Global Change) shares hard-won advice for forward-looking business leaders in a time of change, especially those managing digital transformations. These, Hoque notes, have “no fixed end point,” as technology is in constant flux. “Rather, [transformation] is very much a journey, one characterized by constant reinvention, change, and, happily, opportunity.” To help guide that journey, Hoque presents the L.I.F.T.S. system (Learn, Investigate, Formulate, Take Off, and Study) as a tool to drive digital transformations with clear eyes, predictable outcomes, full understanding of the metrics and business uses of new technologies like AI, and an absence of waste.

Reinvent sets itself apart by recognizing that the present moment is already passing, as the present moment always does—and that the pace of change will only accelerate. Hoque urges readers and their businesses to be fast and flexible but also to implement strategies that ensure that adaptation isn’t reckless. He calls for leaders to be aware of the inevitable and constant changes in the way consumers engage with companies and purchase products, to “recraft” the employee experience for the remote-work present and future, to prioritize digital security, and to explore and embrace the possibilities of AI and machine learning in a host of innovative ways, for efficiency and calculating complex analytics, but also as security boon and a “pinch” hitter for missing staffers.

This well-organized, easy-to-follow guide is upbeat and informative, with clear take-aways after each chapter, specific nuts-and-bolts advice and tools for creating business value metrics and measuring the financial impact of new technologies on the bottom line. up-to-date forecasts of what’s coming next. As in previous books, Hoque’s an inviting writer, one quick to acknowledge the burdens on business leaders and offer adaptable suggestions for trying to facilitate change in potentially hidebound institutions.

BOOK REVIEW

Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite

Reinvent: Navigating Business Transformation in a Hyperdigital Era is a work of non-fiction in the business, technology, and organizational leadership subgenres. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and will attract those who are keen to move with the times and work toward greater leadership skills. Penned by author Faisal Hoque, this excellent guidebook offers practical advice and sage wisdom as we tackle the precarious world of ever-changing technology and the challenges associated with adapting to it across every facet of a company’s approach and operations. Using Hoque’s organizational methodology of LIFTS — learn, investigate, formulate, take off, and study – readers can approach this tricky topic in a highly accessible and inspiring fashion.

Author Faisal Hoque is not only a writer who understands business but one who understands people, and it’s the partnership of mindset and framework that really sells this incredible book. The work is split into three sections to help even the most recent newcomers to the business world to understand the need for openness and adaptation in technology and mindset, cementing a well-researched need for ongoing transformation to garner greater success. The methodology is easy to access yet suitably deep, and I loved the way that earlier ideas were built upon gradually to offer an in-depth, practical look at why and how we must transform ourselves to accept change, and new innovations, and be open-minded to the results. Overall, Reinvent is a fantastic read that will surely inspire business newcomers to look at leadership from so many different relevant levels, and I’d also recommend it for those who may feel stuck in a rut or behind the times in their current approach.

“Mr Hoque’s expertise is spread across a wide spectrum and this adds to the clarity with which he blends his insights. He is a thought leader, serial entrepreneur, technology innovator, and also the author of many books, including Everything Connects, Survive to Thrive, and The Power of Convergence. When it comes to disruption, he observes that it is not just the Fourth Industrial Revolution that has been a phenomenal force.

There is a “perfect storm” of other factors too —Covid-19, climate change, and misinformation. These change drivers are the focus of “Where we are now”, the first section of the book. The next section explores the opportunities we have as consumers, workers, educators, and individuals of an increasingly connected society. “In such a world of seismic shifts, transformational leadership at all levels—from heads of state to individuals—offers the best opportunity to leverage change to transform all our lives for the better,” Mr Hoque says. This is also the theme the book’s title is woven around— Lift —the opportunity all of us have to contribute to the betterment of everyone though transformational leadership.

He talks at length about the opportunities that have opened up and the perks they offer at an individual level as well as in education, healthcare, and so on. In the business sphere, the opportunity is both financial and ethical. The primary opportunity is driven by an explosive change triggered by the pandemic — expansion of the customer and marketplace appeal beyond issues such as price. Although price is still an issue, it does not hold the single dominance it once commanded. What consumers look for is not just the least expensive choices; they are keen on being associated with businesses that “do good”.

This demands that businesses align their priorities with the shift in consumer thinking, and establish strategies and systems with which to better understand others, Mr Hoque adds. Empathy has to be an imperative internally too, in order to ensure that employees feel valued and understood. Those that practise an active form of empathy are also identifying social responsibility, environmental practices, and employee relations as factors that can influence consumer decision-making. Businesses can also play a seminal role in the war against misinformation—through planned partnerships with governments. Such social commitments would serve as a powerful marketing tool. As for the public sector, Mr Hoque says that the future lies in “a decidedly less tech, more human form of operation”.

Cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” This feels increasingly more true in the current post-pandemic world.

The collision of the four drivers of change—the Fourth Industrial Revolution, COVID-19, climate change, and misinformation—offer unprecedented opportunity to the individual. That’s because, from a global standpoint, much of the enormous change that has already occurred, as well as change that has yet to come, has focused on empowering the individual and making him or her better informed, more engaged, and hopefully happier, healthier, and more fulfilled.

Individuals have more opportunity than ever to direct the course of their own lives, be it in a professional or career setting, education, health care, or many other areas. We are all becoming leaders in our own right, empowered to make decisions, adapt to the changing environment around us, and serve as catalysts for pervasive change for the better.

If there’s a single word that encapsulates the opportunity afforded to these individual leaders, it might well be consumer. The individual has been moved to the powerful role of consumer—the end user who wields the capacity and influence to impact and transform—in multiple sectors, most notably: work, health care, and varied forms of collective, community involvement.

WORK

While companies may deem the pandemic a hard pill to swallow because they’re used to closely monitoring employees in-house, in reality it has given employees the opportunity to potentially become more productive. According to the consulting firm Great Place to Work, 5% of American employees worked from home pre-pandemic, but by May 2020, more than 60% were working remotely. And that group working in varied alternate settings has made the most of their time, according to a study by Stanford University and published in “The Quarterly Journal of Economics” of about 16,000 workers whose productivity when working from home increased by 13%. The study attributed the boost to a quieter work environment and fewer breaks and days lost to illness

If a company doesn’t value its employees and/or is pressuring them to work in-house even if they fear possible exposure to the pandemic or do not wish to spend hours commuting every day, there are companies ready and willing to hire those employees as remote workers, especially with their newfound skills. The employee, rather than the company, has the upper hand in deciding when and how they wish to work.

Another component of remote work is the discovery and understanding that not every worker produces best in a standard nine-to-five environment. Some people are night owls; others are morning people. As a result, perfectly capable employees who thrive at night might be incorrectly classified as slow, lazy, or incapable of doing a job that just so happens to fall into their nonproductive times of the day. Writers, for example, generally thrive in quiet surroundings and less so in chaotic or typical “office” environments with noise, interruptions, and meetings.

Remote work affords the scheduling autonomy that allows employees to work at a time of day when their skills are at their optimal. No matter if it’s early in the morning, in the middle of the night, or at intermittent points throughout the day, workers are gaining the independence necessary to use the day to their advantage rather than adhering to a needlessly unproductive schedule.

Additionally, individuals will have the opportunity to develop what can be referred to as greater self-management skills. With greater autonomy from traditional, hierarchical management styles and structure, individual workers (particularly the growing population of freelancers) will have the chance and the impetus to develop such softer skills as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance, and flexibility. They’ll assume that much more control as leaders of their own careers.

Individual empowerment goes well beyond professional development and productivity. Individuals will also have the opportunity to approach work-life balance in a completely different context—incorporating a much more blended and interactive perspective. In particular, remote work opportunities will afford social and familial benefits that often were limited in “traditional” workplace logistics.

EDUCATION

As technology is increasingly incorporated into education at all levels, remote learning and other options will afford the opportunity to offer valuable education to more people. Greater access to education might also serve to mitigate the stigma of higher education only being available to the wealthy and other forms of perceived education inequality.

According to a 2021 study by Bay View Analytics titled “The Digital Learning Pulse Survey,” students enrolled at colleges and universities in the United States overwhelmingly supported the continuation or increase in the use of online learning options. The majority of students, 73%, “somewhat” or “strongly” (46%) agreed that they would like to take some fully online courses in the future. A slightly smaller number of students—68%—indicated they would be interested in taking courses offering a combination of in-person and online instruction.

In addition, technology will make lifelong learning that much more viable and adaptable to personalization. Rather than being force-fed rote material over the first 20 years of their lives, students will be given the chance not only to continue to learn over a greater time span but also to have greater input in developing a learning program that’s consistent with their interests and the needs of both themselves and society as a whole—a more fluid, flexible approach to learning.

HEALTH CARE

The future of health care will be centered on the consumer/patient. 24/7 access to data and information, including data regarding cost of care, will place consumers at the very heart of their health care, potentially lowering costs significantly.

Likewise, a growing shift in health care, telehealth, and personal accountability for wellness has been driven by both the pandemic and the technological explosion of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Interactive devices such as wearable health trackers are only one of many emerging such tools that are all geared to current and active patient monitoring and care.

While electronic medical records have been readily available to patients for a decade or more, health-care facilities now further engage with their patients via online portals where patients can check on their health statistics, check their diagnoses, and send messages to their caregivers without having to meet in person unless an emergency dictates it. This trend extends medical outreach to patients who are either unfit or unable to travel to their primary care physicians, as well as those who live ruraly and cannot easily reach adequate medical care.

COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

As is the case with other areas of society, governments now serve a citizenry that has unprecedented access to news, information, and data. Given the rise of a more informed community, governments will be challenged to approach these connected citizens as empowered consumers—consumers whose level of satisfaction and constructive engagement will hinge on confidence that they’re receiving genuine returns on their investments in government.

Evidence of the greater role of the individual in government is already appearing in many parts of the world. For instance, at the national level, Denmark’s MindLab was established in 2002 as one of the first government policy laboratories. The lab was tasked with developing creative, citizen-focused approaches to the ways in which policies are designed. (The lab has since been supplanted by the Disruption Task Force to further explore varied benefits of new technologies, data, and business models.)

Armed with new technology, a different mindset, and greatly enlarged expectations, the individual has and will continue to exert a growing influence across any number of the elements of daily life. But the individual isn’t alone in the opportunity created by a climate of disruption and change. Business and industry are also positioned to capture enormous opportunity—exciting prospects that are by no means limited to a profit and loss statement.

“Lift: Fostering the Leader in You Amid Revolutionary Global Change” markets itself as a book for leadership amongst a backdrop of revolutionary global change. Despite its daunting promises, the author and all contributors have succinctly delivered a three-part read gracefully outlining the causes of global change, the opportunity these changes provide and where, as well as the transformational abilities they offer.

Immediately, “Lift” opens with the four drivers of global change being addressed within: (1) the fourth industrial revolution, an interesting and believable eye opening introduction to the basis of change we find ourselves amidst, (2) the most obvious recent change, COVID-19, (3) climate change, a topic we’ve been hearing about forever, but it’s not being slowed or adequately addressed and continues to wreak havoc and drive the need for change, and lastly (4) misinformation, a topic that really took off mainstream during Trump’s time in office and the impact of it has opened the door to change and growth.

From here, the authors do a great job of identifying specifically where these changes leave the door open for opportunity, particularly as it pertains to the individual, the business, the education industry, the healthcare industry and within government. And, while some of the opportunity areas felt like “pie in the sky” dreams, especially as it pertains to the United States’ notoriously slow government, the authors provide examples of other country’s governments that have sought to address the areas of opportunity and how the U.S. can match in speed, growth, and technology, making the suggestions feel more realistic and motivating.

Adding to the primary text within, the authors have included many stock photos that don’t necessarily fit the narrative but aid in breaking up the text and offering readers pause to consider the context and insights offered. Further, each chapter offers several grayed boxes of additional content and stories to help bring the concepts to life, adding a frequent and welcome supplement to the overall chapter’s perspective.

The final section was the smallest as it tied the entirety of the read together and most aligned with the book’s purpose and promise. While sections one and two built up the idea and need for transformative leadership and emotional intelligence, the third and final section wrapped it all in a neat bow for readers to understand and use within their toolkit as the leader within them approach the revolutionary global change in which we find ourselves.

Succinct, well researched, cohesively laid out, and a strong call to action, “Lift” brings readers purpose and tools to address the changes occurring globally which will impact us all for decades to come.

The pandemic era phenomenon known as “The Great Resignation” has seen millions of employees voluntarily leaving their jobs. In January 2022 alone, some 4.3 million workers quit, adding to the staggering 48 million who abandoned their jobs in 2021, according to data from the Labor Bureau.

As reported in a Jobslist survey, several common elements stand out. Roughly 19% of study respondents didn’t like how their bosses treated them; 17% left due to inadequate benefits; and 13% said they lacked work/life balance.

Millions are rethinking their careers, long-term goals, work environments, and how to achieve a healthier work/life balance. Despite the Great Resignation’s unsettling nature, it highlights the enormous need and opportunity for companies to transform most every aspect of their operations. Organizations leveraging that opportunity will be better positioned to address employee satisfaction proactively and also adjust and respond to the constantly shifting marketplace. Otherwise, they’ll struggle to survive.

RECASTING THE OFFICE

When work shifted to remote settings for many employers in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, companies assumed the situation would be temporary. However, as months stretched into years, much of the working population found that they enjoyed working remotely, at least part of the time.

In a 2021 remote work survey, background check provider GoodHire found that 68% of employees preferred working from home, with nearly half declaring they’d either quit or search for new jobs offering remote work if their employers ordered them to return to the office. Many employees expressed they’d take a pay cut or forfeit benefits in exchange for remote work options.

Lift by Faisal Hoque

Their enthusiasm is well justified, because even “hybrid” remote work—where in-office and remote work blend together as a flexible routine—has helped many employees establish a healthier work-life balance.

However, a discouraging number of employers are hesitant to adapt to this new normal. According to a study on talent engagement from an ExecuSearch, 25% are employers planning on employees returning to full-time, in-house work. In a 2022 survey by Microsoft, 50% of employers wanted staff in-house five days a week.

The reasons for this insistence are varied. One common argument is that company culture cannot be adequately maintained if workers are scattered. However, a study by the research firm Gartner found that a hybrid work model significantly boosted employee engagement and sense of inclusion.

Remote work can also lead to a sense of isolation among certain employees. A Gensler Research Institute survey found respondents missed most about being in an office was meeting and socializing with colleagues. Further, 7 out of every 10 employees felt more isolated after switching to remote work.

Obviously, something has to give. And business transformation where digitalization plays a central role can be key in leveraging the advantages of remote work arrangements while addressing its drawbacks. As for those downsides, business transformation should also include management helping remote workers to address and mitigate the issues of isolation and loneliness.

A few suggestions include trying these steps:

Encouraging remote workers not to work from home exclusively. Leaders can beat loneliness to the punch by advocating a variety of office-alternate work settings, such as cafes or parks.

Urging remote workers to unplug. Leaders can provide a routine that specifies when work ends, such as a certain time of day when emails can go unread or an office door which is closed and left behind.

Establish a broad network—and don’t talk about just work. Leaders can encourage remote employees to interact with people other than co-workers, and not limiting conversations with colleagues to work matters.

Leverage the flexibility. Leaders can make certain that remote workers vary their daily downtime. Take a walk, play a video game, or do some gardening or yoga. It’s not professional blasphemy.

Remind remote workers they’re important team members. Solicit input and feedback from remote workers. Routinely ask them what they would do differently to strengthen the remote work experience.

Remote work, for all its advantages, has its caveats. That balanced perspective can go a long way in making the most of remote work’s potential—not to mention digitalization’s possibilities for all employees, remote and otherwise.

FLEXIBILITY IS NOW A WORKER MUST-HAVE

Employees value greater flexibility, and any sweeping form of transformation that fails to address this is missing an essential target. Leaders often fail to realize just how important genuine flexibility is—so much so that their views of it differ substantially from that of their workforce.

Workers have experienced greater professional flexibility during COVID-19, and one study notes that 79% of professionals want to maintain their newfound flexibility post-pandemic. In a related finding, one in three said they would be willing to take a pay cut in exchange for more flexibility with a new employer.

Unfortunately, this is where a significant disconnect kicks in. The 2021Gartner survey on hybrid work, the researchers found that roughly three-quarters of executive leaders believe they have an established culture of flexibility. By contrast, only 57% of employees believed that their employers truly embraced flexible work. Further, nearly three-quarters of executives believe the business understands how flexible work patterns support employees; only half of employees share this view.

Transformation which includes a significant digital role can narrow that chasm, and digitalization can help cement a commitment to flexibility—a cornerstone of employees’ view of an engaging and supportive place to work.

FAST Company, the contrarian and innovative business magazine that grew its own publishing house and produced Fasal Hoque’s LIFT, did not get successful in this harsh media world by preaching no-waves traditional corporate “wisdom.” All that faded as the publication showed eyes into the future, featuring experts and business innovators working hard to promote AI, robotics, new tech, as well as pathfinding human approaches. Readership has grown in an era (FAST Company puts overall readership at 3M) where other media – journalism-based tv, big and small publishers – have shrunk or collapsed or been acquired under the weight of ferocious competitive pressures. Its sad, to be sure, but it is our media world right now.

“The more we can all learn from each other, the more successful we can become as leaders in our own right.” Faisal Holque

Enter Faisal Hoque, armed with a FAST Company-type approach to change. The emphasis moves to more collaboration driven by the push to survive, and the author details how one positive side-effect from our series of crises is the benefit to individuals who correctly read their environment and work hard to meet new goals. In fact, Hoque shows how some previously underappreciated strengths – transformational leadership, systemic thinking and experiential learning – help move corporate workers steadily along a path marked by unexpected crises and disruptions. From crisis and pain comes opportunity, and this innovative book will help readers recognize new opportunities just as they begin to form.

Interesting to note are Hoque’s four drivers that are causing disruption and change at the same time they offer unprecedented opportunity:

the Fourth Industrial Revolution (although there are those of us geeks who believe we are now in The Fifth)

Covid-19

climate change

misinformation or fake news.

With these four drivers, the Mill Girl is particularly struck by the author’s emphasis on experiential learning. For so many years and through so many improvement programs, many of which were academically inspired, we have been shouldered with challenging learning approaches – classroom or PowerPoint based – but this concept of experiential learning is so powerful and fresh (particularly for those of us dyslexics!). Its about time we broadened our learning strategy, especially during a crisis!

Readers will be pleased to find end-of-chapter points that help translate advice from leaders “who have been there,” along with specific recommended actions to move forward. The book is not a difficult read, but its references to technical opportunities are invaluable.

This motivational guide urges readers to anticipate the relentless pace of change at the dawn of what Hoque and c-authors Jeff Wuorio and Shelley Moench-Kelly call the Fourth Industrial Revolution, an era of new technology, an ongoing pandemic, and climate disruption. Broken down into three clear-eyed sections, Lift lays out a foundation–and offers innovative tools–to help leaders and entrepreneurs to become “transformational leaders” that are better equipped to motivate and lead as the world around us keeps evolving. Hoque and co. map out the four drivers of the revolutionary changes shaping our world, including Covid-19 and an epidemic of misinformation, and examine their impact on work, education, health care, and many other areas of our lives. Accepting rather than resisting change is crucial, Lift argues, for understanding it as an opportunity and daring to become a transformational leader.

“Change may be inevitable, but it’s never prudent to rush into anything without considering your resources,” Hoque writes. With much practical advice, point-illustrating sidebars, and real-world examples, Lift urges forward-thinking innovation in health care, education, the public sector, and of course business, arguing that when it comes to issues like sustainability or empathetic leadership good intentions are not enough. The authors offer intriguing tools like the questions to ask “to turn everyone in your company into a futurist” and tips to develop emotional intelligence. Each chapter ends with a section called “Learn and Transform,” which invites readers to examine how the material relates to their own needs and opportunities.

This is an inviting, pragmatic read for anyone looking to take on a leadership and motivational role in a world that is rapidly evolving. Perfect for both entrepreneurs and those just entering the workforce, the tips and personal anecdotes from the authors offer readers an in-depth look at what it takes to continue to keep up with this ever-changing world–and not get left behind.

Takeaway: An inviting, in-depth guide to transformational leadership in a world of continual change.

BOOK REVIEW

Reviewed by Tammy Ruggles for Readers’ Favorite

Lift: Fostering the Leader in You Amid Revolutionary Global Change (English and Spanish Edition), by Faisal Hoque, Jeff Wuorio, and Shelley Moench-Kelly, is a compelling, powerful guide to transforming leadership around the globe. Our world is changing by the day, month, and year, and will continue to change. In the face of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, COVID-19, climate change, and economic instability, emphasis should now be placed on a different style of leadership–out with the old way of short-term results; in with a new way of people-centered, long-term results. These authors show how this is the perfect time to make some changes that will actually make a difference in this generation and the ones to come. This leadership style can extend to all facets of how we operate, from work, leisure, government, management, and beyond.

The authors call this type of leader “transformational”, one who leads with the long view in mind, and concrete solutions, not just theory or platitudes. This style of leading involves compassion, action, emotional intelligence, and learning by experience. Although the entire book is fascinating and inspiring, I was most intrigued by the chapter that explained the Fourth Industrial Revolution, aka 4IR, which interconnects global technologies. After reading this book, you too may realize that we will probably never go back to the way we did things before COVID-19–change is needed, and now is the perfect time. Another interesting chapter is on the spread of misinformation, and how this new way of leading can address it. There is so much in this book to like, and the possibilities are far-reaching: finance, ethics, healthcare, technology, education, co-bots (robots acting as co-workers), etc. If you want to be this kind of new leader, or if the idea excites you for the great changes it could bring, Lift: Fostering the Leader in You Amid Revolutionary Global Change by Faisal Hoque is a must-read.
